Musk Says SpaceXAI Will Become SpaceXSI After Trump’s SI Order
Elon Musk said on X on Sunday that SpaceXAI, the AI unit behind the Grok chatbot, will be renamed SpaceXSI. Reports describe the change as applying to that unit, and Musk gave no date.
Is SpaceX changing its name? Reports describe a rename of the AI unit, not of the whole company. Musk said on Oct. 4, 2026, that SpaceXAI will become SpaceXSI, with SI short for “Super Intelligence.” Asked by an X user whether the unit could be renamed SpaceXSI, he replied, “Yes, we will make that change.” Newsweek reports that no formal name change has been announced.
What Musk said
Teslarati reports that Musk posted this string of lines on X early Sunday:
- “No more AI”
- “SI”
- “It’s better”
- “SpaceX is a super intelligence company”
The “Yes, we will make that change” reply answered a user named XFreeze, who had asked, “Any possibility of renaming to SpaceXSI??” Reuters reports that Musk did not say when the change would take effect.
Why now: the executive order
On Sept. 29, President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14434, “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence.” It tells executive agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official correspondence, websites, reports and other non-statutory documents, to the extent the law allows. The order text addresses federal agencies and sets no rules for private companies. It does three other things:
- Defines “Super Intelligence” as the technologies the existing U.S. Code definition of artificial intelligence covers
- Leaves previously issued regulations, contracts, grants and other historical documents unchanged
- Gives the president’s science and technology adviser 60 days to propose legislation defining the term
Musk sat beside Trump that day as tech executives signed a voluntary White House accord. Teslarati quotes him telling reporters afterward: “I think it is worth highlighting the positive benefits of A.I. … S.I., pardon me.”
A third name since February
If the change goes ahead, SpaceXSI will be the unit’s third name since February, Teslarati reports, after xAI and SpaceXAI:
- Feb. 2: SpaceX announces it has acquired xAI, in a deal CNBC says values the combined company at $1.25 trillion
- May: Musk says xAI will be dissolved as a separate company
- July 6: the unit posts that it is now SpaceXAI and unveils a new logo, Engadget reports
- Oct. 4: Musk says SpaceXAI will become SpaceXSI
What we don’t know yet
Reporting on Musk’s posts leaves these points open:
- When the new name takes effect
- Whether it is a legal name change or a branding update
- Whether the @SpaceXAI handle on X will change
- How the change applies to products such as Grok
- Whether the name applies only to the AI unit
- Whether other AI companies will adopt “SI”
SpaceX has not issued a formal announcement that The RED Review could find. SpaceXAI’s website, x.ai, still used the SpaceXAI name on the evening of Oct. 4.
