Slovakia Says Tesla FSD (Supervised) Within Days. You’re Still the Driver.

Slovakia’s transport minister says the country will send a letter recognizing the Dutch approval of Tesla FSD (Supervised) within days. The letter has not been confirmed delivered, FSD (Supervised) is not available in Slovakia today, and the minister says you are still the driver.

Is Tesla FSD (Supervised) approved in Slovakia? Not yet. Transport Minister Jozef Ráž said in a LinkedIn video posted Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 7, 2026, that the ministry will send a recognition letter to the Netherlands, whose regulator RDW approved the system and is Tesla’s lead authority in Europe. Reuters reported on Oct. 8 at 10:37 UTC (12:37 CEST) that Slovakia expects to approve FSD within days, which would make it the ninth EU country to authorize it. Until that letter lands, nothing switches on.

“Once this letter is delivered, the FSD system will be available for use here as well,” Ráž said, according to Reuters. “But remember: you’re still the driver, and you’re responsible for the car. We’re doing this for you.”

What the letter actually does

Slovakia is not running its own approval. It is choosing to recognize one that already exists. The Dutch RDW granted FSD (Supervised) a provisional EU type approval on April 10, 2026, under the Article 39 exemption route for new technology. RDW says that approval is valid only in the Netherlands for now. Other member states can admit it on their own roads, and that is what a recognition letter does.

Slovak outlet Startstop.sk reported that the ministry has already negotiated directly with Tesla and wants to send the “uznávací list” (recognition letter) to the Netherlands “v najbližších dňoch,” in the coming days. Ráž did not give a date for Slovak owners. Tesla has not posted anything about Slovakia, and Tesla’s EU FSD page did not list Slovakia when we checked at 12:30 UTC (14:30 CEST) on Oct. 8.

Key facts

Here is where Slovakia stands on Oct. 8, 2026:

  • The minister: Jozef Ráž is Slovakia’s minister of transport.
  • The plan: The ministry will send a letter to the Netherlands recognizing the RDW approval of FSD (Supervised).
  • The timing: Reuters says Slovakia expects to approve it within days, and no date has been given.
  • Today’s status: The letter has not been confirmed delivered, and FSD (Supervised) is not available in Slovakia.
  • The driver: Ráž says the driver stays responsible for the car.
  • The EU vote: Reuters says an EU-wide vote could come as soon as December.

The country count

Tesla said on Sept. 29 that FSD (Supervised) “has now been approved by 8 EU countries.” That eight includes the Netherlands, which issued the approval, plus seven countries that recognized it:

  • Netherlands, RDW provisional approval, April 10, 2026
  • Lithuania, recognized the Dutch approval in May 2026
  • Estonia, recognized the Dutch approval in May 2026
  • Denmark, recognized the Dutch approval in June 2026
  • Belgium, recognized the Dutch approval in June 2026
  • Slovenia, recognized the Dutch approval on Sept. 7, 2026
  • Czechia, recognized the Dutch approval on Sept. 21, 2026
  • Croatia, recognized the Dutch approval on Sept. 29, 2026

Tesla Europe announced the last three the same way. Its posts for Slovenia (Sept. 7, 17:00 UTC / 19:00 CEST), Czechia (Sept. 21, 08:13 UTC / 10:13 CEST) and Croatia (Sept. 29, 08:02 UTC / 10:02 CEST) each said “FSD Supervised now approved in” the country, followed by “Rollout will begin soon.” None gave a rollout date. Slovakia becomes the ninth only after its letter is delivered.

The accident-rate claim

Ráž also said, “Data shows that these cars reduce the accident rate and that’s exactly what we’re aiming for,” Reuters reported. He did not cite a dataset in the quotes Reuters carried.

Read that next to the other Reuters story from the same day. A Reuters investigation published Oct. 8 said seven traffic-safety researchers who examined Tesla’s European safety research found it cannot support the company’s crash-reduction claims. That study is not necessarily what Ráž had in mind. It does mean “data shows” is the minister’s claim, not an independent finding.

What does not change

One more country does not make this an EU approval. An EU-wide authorization needs a qualified majority: 15 of the 27 member states, representing 65% of the bloc’s population, according to Reuters. Nine is not 15. Reuters says that vote could come as soon as December.

Recognition also does not change the product. In every country that has turned it on, FSD (Supervised) is a driver-assistance system. RDW says a car with FSD Supervised “is not self-driving,” and the driver must stay in control. Slovakia’s minister said the same thing in his video.

What Slovak owners should do

If you drive a Tesla in Slovakia and already paid for FSD, here is the order to watch for:

  1. Wait for the ministry or Tesla to confirm the letter was delivered, because the minister’s video is a plan, not an approval.
  2. Watch Tesla Europe on X for a “now approved in Slovakia” post, the format it used for Slovenia, Czechia and Croatia.
  3. Expect a gap between approval and your car, because Tesla said only “Rollout will begin soon” in those three countries.
  4. Keep your eyes on the road and your hands ready once it arrives, because the minister says you remain responsible for the car.
  5. Treat the accident-rate line as the minister’s claim, not a published Slovak dataset.

Answers

Is Tesla FSD (Supervised) legal in Slovakia now?

Not yet. Transport Minister Jozef Ráž said the recognition letter will go to the Netherlands within days. As of Oct. 8, the letter had not been confirmed delivered, and Tesla had not announced Slovakia.

What is the recognition letter?

It is Slovakia formally recognizing the provisional EU type approval that the Dutch RDW gave FSD (Supervised) on April 10, 2026. That approval is valid only in the Netherlands unless another member state recognizes it.

Would Slovakia be the eighth or ninth EU country?

Ninth. Tesla’s count of eight includes the Netherlands plus Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia and Croatia. Slovakia would be ninth once its letter is delivered.

Does this mean FSD is approved across the EU?

No. An EU-wide decision needs at least 15 of 27 member states representing 65% of the EU population. Reuters says that vote could come as soon as December.

Who is responsible if the car makes a mistake?

You are. “You’re still the driver, and you’re responsible for the car,” Ráž said, according to Reuters. FSD (Supervised) does not make the car autonomous.
