Tesla Unlocks Powerwall 3 Add-On for Powerwall 2 Homes
Owner action: If you already run Powerwall 2 in North America or Australia, Tesla Energy now says you can add a Powerwall 3 instead of stacking more PW2 units. Software floor is 26.26. A Tesla Certified Installer still has to do the work.
Tesla Energy posted it on X on the evening of September 22, 2026 (U.S. time):
“Powerwall 2 Owners: You can now increase your storage capacity with a Powerwall 3
Available in North America & Australia”
For Australia, the post confirms rather than launches. Tesla told Australian and New Zealand installers in July 2026 that mixed Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems had moved to official firmware. The new part is North America.
What Tesla’s own installer docs allow
Tesla’s Energy Library application note — Installing Powerwall 3 in an Existing Powerwall 2 System — is the primary for the mix, not the consumer marketing page.
Tesla’s note lists this supported mix on software 26.26 or later:
- Up to 4 Powerwall 2 units
- 1 Powerwall 3
- Up to 3 Powerwall 3 Expansion units
- Backup Gateway 2
- Tesla Remote Meter
The note does not support these setups as-is:
- More than 4 Powerwall 2 units
- Backup Gateway 1
- Neurio meter (swap to Tesla Remote Meter)
- Powerwall+ systems (Tesla’s note says replace the Powerwall+ units with Powerwall 3)
In the mixed stack, Powerwall 3 becomes the site controller. Backup Gateway 2 stays the islanding controller and site meter. The Powerwall 3 on/off switch kills the whole system; each Powerwall 2 switch only kills that unit.
Tesla Australia’s support page matches the same unit caps and adds three owner-facing points:
- Powerwall 2 keeps its original warranty
- New Powerwall 3 and Expansion units carry their own 10-year warranty
- On a three-phase grid connection, added Powerwall 3 output is limited to 5 kW
The numbers Tesla published for mixed power and energy
From the same Energy Library ratings table (do not treat these as a quote or an install price):
| Mix | Energy | Continuous power range in Tesla’s table |
|---|---|---|
| 1× PW3 + 1× PW2 | 27 kWh | 10.8–16.5 kW depending on PW3 rating |
| 1× PW3 + 2× PW2 | 40.5 kWh | 15.8–21.5 kW |
| 1× PW3 + 3× PW2 | 54 kWh | 20.8–26.5 kW |
| 1× PW3 + 4× PW2 | 67.5 kWh | 25.8–31.5 kW |
| 1× PW3 + 3 Expansions + 4× PW2 | 108 kWh | same power as the 4× PW2 row |
Tesla’s footnote: each Expansion adds 13.5 kWh and does not increase system power. Maximum continuous charge on a system with Expansion units is 8 kW. State phase-imbalance rules can cut actual output.
Powerwall 2 usable energy is 13.5 kWh per unit on Tesla’s current support spec sheet. Powerwall 3 is also listed at 13.5 kWh per pack, with 11.5 kW continuous on the current U.S. spec line. Those are Tesla support numbers, not a third-party estimate.
Ignore the stale “cannot be added” sentence on tesla.com
As of this writing, Tesla’s U.S. consumer pages Combining Systems with Powerwall and What to Expect for Powerwall 3 still say Powerwall 3 cannot be added to Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+.
That sentence is leftover copy. Tesla’s newer installer documents and the Tesla Energy post supersede it.
The current primary sources are Tesla Energy’s September 22 X post and the Energy Library application note. Tesla’s Powerwall 3 service manual was also updated September 17, 2026 to tell installers to update mixed systems to software 26.26 or later. If your advisor quotes the old FAQ, point them at Tesla Energy and the installer library.
What to do this week
Work through these in order before you ask for a quote:
- Open the Tesla app and check your Powerwall software version. Tesla’s installer docs require 26.26 or later, and the installer updates the system during setup if it is behind.
- Check that your system has Backup Gateway 2 and a Tesla Remote Meter. Gateway 1 or a Neurio meter means extra swap work before a Powerwall 3 can go in.
- Count your Powerwall 2 units. More than four is a hard no in Tesla’s table.
- Book a Tesla Certified Installer. Tesla Australia states the mix must be installed that way for safety, integration, and warranty.
- Keep a working Powerwall 2 in place even if a web FAQ says otherwise. Tesla Energy’s post is about increasing storage capacity, not replacing units.
Tesla has not published a U.S. consumer price for the add-on in the materials used for this article. Do not treat forum quotes or installer ballparks as Tesla’s number.
Answers
Can I add a Powerwall 3 to my Powerwall 2?
Yes, in North America and Australia. Tesla’s docs call for software 26.26 or later, Backup Gateway 2, a Tesla Remote Meter, and a Tesla Certified Installer.
How big can a mixed system get?
Up to four Powerwall 2 units, one Powerwall 3, and three Powerwall 3 Expansion units. That is 108 kWh in Tesla’s table.
Does adding a Powerwall 3 change my Powerwall 2 warranty?
No, per Tesla Australia. Powerwall 2 keeps its original warranty, and the new units carry their own 10-year warranty.
Can I add a Powerwall 3 to a Powerwall+ system?
No. Tesla’s note says Powerwall+ units have to be replaced with Powerwall 3.
What does the add-on cost?
Tesla has not published a U.S. consumer price.
