Does your Model Y Premium actually get Tesla’s $80 V2L adapter?

Maybe. Tesla’s U.S. shop now lists the $80 Outlet Adapter for Model Y Premium, but the trim name does not decide it. The car’s power conversion hardware does. Check the Tesla app shop against your VIN before you spend $80.

What changed

Tesla added the same Outlet Adapter already sold for Cybertruck and Model Y Performance to Model Y Premium in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Electrek and Not a Tesla App report the shop listing as Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance, and Cybertruck. Model Y Standard and every Model 3 stay off that list. Tesla has not issued a press release.

The adapter is not a built-in car outlet. It clips onto a Gen 3 Mobile Connector. Output is 120 V, 20 A, 2.4 kW total. InsideEVs and NATA describe two household outlets on the adapter, sharing that 20 A combined. This is vehicle-to-load for tools and small appliances. It is not Cybertruck-style whole-home Powershare (Electrek still cites 11.5 kW for that). Tesla’s Powershare page still says Powershare is not available for Model S, 3, X, and Y.

Configurator copy now shows the adapter as a cost extra on U.S. Model Y Premium, per Electrek and InsideEVs. The shop still checks the VIN at purchase.

Who it is for

These cars and owners are the ones the listing actually covers:

• Recently built Model Y Premium (Juniper) with the newer bidirectional PCS

• Model Y Performance, Model Y L, and Cybertruck (already had V2L)

• Owners who already have, or will buy, a Gen 3 Mobile Connector

Who it is not for

These stay out, even if the badge now says Premium:

• Model Y Standard

• Any Model 3 (the shop does not list it)

• Pre-Juniper Model Y

• Canada and Europe (InsideEVs)

• Early Juniper / older Long Range AWD cars that still have the single-phase PCS, even if the car is now called Premium

• Anyone hoping a software update unlocks a car the shop already marks incompatible

Tesla has not published a hard build cutoff. NATA says May 2026 Junipers are often reported incompatible and June builds are mixed. Teslarati’s Aug 16 check: a 2026 Long Range AWD ordered in 2025 failed the shop (“not compatible”) and showed the older 48 A single-phase PCS in the parts catalog. Do not treat “2026” or “Premium” as a yes.

What to do

Do this before you order:

1. Open the Tesla app Shop and search Outlet Adapter. Screenshot the VIN compatibility line. “Not compatible with your 2026 Model Y” is a real fail, not a glitch.

2. Open Tesla’s Parts Catalog, enter your VIN, and look at the power-conversion assembly. A two-piece / PCS2-style unit is the V2L-capable hardware. A “48AMP - 1PHASE” PCS is not.

3. Confirm you have a Gen 3 Mobile Connector. Gen 2 will not take this adapter.

4. If the shop says no, do not order the adapter hoping firmware changes it. Do not DIY a PCS swap.

A portable power station is the more rational workaround if the shop blocks you. Teslarati: it looks like parts alone are $1,750 before labor. Tesla has not posted a consumer retrofit price. We Talk Tesla reports a service procedure exists for a PCS1 to PCS2 Lite swap. That is high-voltage work, not a Saturday garage job.
