Is Tesla demoing a flying Roadster this month?

Possibly. The Information reported August 14 that Tesla plans to show the next-generation Roadster as early as this month, including a limited-edition car that lifts off the ground on SpaceX cold-gas thrusters. The planned demo is at SpaceX’s rocket test site in McGregor, Texas, three people familiar with the plans told The Information, as reported by Electrek. The thruster car is to be operated remotely with nobody inside. Spectators would be kept several hundred yards back because the thrusters are loud enough to damage eardrums.

What would actually fly?

Is this the Roadster people reserved in 2017?

No. The hover car is a special, not-street-legal edition. Reservation holders paid $50,000 for the standard Roadster and $250,000 for the Founders Series. Deliveries were first targeted for 2020 and have been moved repeatedly. Tesla has not published a firm delivery date with this report.

The production car’s design path, per The Information via Electrek: Musk picked an ultralight carbon-fiber tub over a stretched Model S Plaid architecture.
