Tesla Officially Kills Solar Roof Tiles

Tesla has officially killed the Solar Roof.

On August 20, 2026, Electrek confirmed with two sources close to the program that Tesla informed its network of certified third-party installers: solar roof tiles are no longer available to order. Going forward, the company will supply only conventional solar panels.

Tesla’s own website makes it official. The long-standing tesla.com/solarroof page now redirects straight to the solar panels page. “Solar Roof” has been completely removed from the Energy navigation menu, which now lists only Solar Panels, Powerwall, and Megapack.

Internally, Tesla concluded the product is simply not financially viable.

This closes a chapter that began in October 2016, when Elon Musk unveiled the Solar Roof (on the old Desperate Housewives sets) as a centerpiece of the SolarCity acquisition story. The vision was bold: beautiful integrated glass tiles that generate power and replace a traditional roof, with ambitious scaling goals.

Reality never matched. Manufacturing was complex. Installation was labor-intensive. Shading and performance limits made the economics tough outside the most expensive homes. Prices climbed after many contracts were signed (leading to a class-action settlement). Tesla stopped breaking out Solar Roof deployment numbers in its quarterly reports in early 2024, and the product largely disappeared from marketing. The formal discontinuation simply makes the retreat permanent.

For current Solar Roof owners: Existing systems should continue to receive support and service through Tesla’s normal channels. No new installations will be offered.

What this means for everyone else: Tesla Energy is fully focused on what actually scales — conventional rooftop solar panels paired with Powerwall, plus large-scale Megapack deployments. Musk has already highlighted plans for major U.S. solar panel manufacturing. The flashy custom-tile experiment is over.
